STAR Program

The IEEE Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist Program aims to introduce high-school students (grades 9–12) to the diverse branches of engineering through informative sessions and hands-on technical workshops.

Phase I – Introduction & Workshops

Objective: Provide introductions to different engineering fields for pre-university students with the hope of motivating them to pursue STEM careers.

The STAR Program is divided into two events each school semester. First, students attend a series of informational sessions led by UPRM faculty on branches such as civil, industrial, computer engineering, and more. Student organizations like IEEE PES and IEEE CS share their vision, mission, projects, and opportunities. Next, in the Engineering Workshop, participants join hands-on workshops led by volunteers, gaining practical experience through small technical projects.

Phase II – Mass Outreach

The IEEE WIE Student Affinity Group is dedicated to strengthening and highlighting women's contributions in technology and science. For over 17 years, we have fulfilled this mission through high-school outreach and professional development.

In STAR Program Phase II, we invite high-school students from across Puerto Rico to participate in a dynamic, branch-specific activity offered by student associations representing each engineering field. We request authorization to host this island-wide event to familiarize attendees with their chosen engineering pathway.
